INDUSTRY MAKES MOUNTAIN OUT OF LAURYN HILL: The music world is stumped by the path of a Hip-Hop prodigy
by J.C. Brooks
Fans are intently awaiting the beloved Lauryn Hill's return to the stage. But, her future in Hip-Hop is relatively uncertain with reports of emotional instability and talk of adherence to a cult-like spirituality. Rolling Stone's October 30, cover story on the artist delves deeply into recent personal news on the star by using accounts from friends which include Pras of the Fugees and Roots drummer Ahmir Thompson.
Lauryn's seemingly effortless success is garnished with accolades such as 12 million solo albums sold for the 1998 release of "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." The 1999 Grammy awards, during which Hill took home five trophies from 11 nominations, including album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album; the most ever for a woman. In 1996, her group the "Fugees" sold 17 million copies of their sophomore effort "The Score." So the question could be posed that with all of this success what is it that still renders this woman ultimately incomplete and searching.
It has been rumored that Wyclef Jean and Lauryn were having an affair over a period of time that led to the permanent disbandment of the Fugees. According to Rolling Stone, Ahmir Thompson gave insight into the competition of the dynamic duo.
"Her solo career wasn't based on 'I wanna do an album,'" says Thompson, the Roots drummer. "It was based on not being Wyclef's side girl."
Pras has little good to say about Jean these days. He told Rolling Stone that Wyclef is the reason the Fugees never saw the light of day again.
"He's the cancer of the [Fugees]," He's the cancer. You can quote me. He's the reason why it got wrecked to begin with, he's the reason why it's not fixed."
Wyclef declined to be a part of the Rolling Stone interview and simply stated that "I'm somewhere else in my head," he says on the phone from his studio. "Certain things I don't talk about. I'm in another zone." He pauses. "I wish it didn't go down the way it went."
The article gives us insight into Lauryn's personal suffering. It explains the hurt she experienced with the soured relationship with Wyclef, her uncertain first pregnancy, and the bomb of her 4 children's father being married to another woman which left her marriage null and void.
The article explains that Rohan Marley, to whom she was supposed to be married also dropped a bombshell on her after her first son was born. Someone told her that he already had a wife.
Marley a former football player for the University of Miami, married an eighteen-year-old woman from New Jersey in a ceremony in Miami when he was only a sophomore. He has two children with the woman.
The reports are altogether shocking and don't stop with the relationships, but concludes with Lauryn's spirituality that Pras refers to as a "cult" type following.
He said, "Brother Anthony was definitely on some other $#@!," Pras says. "I had a tape of [his teachings]. That $#@! is ill. F'ed me up. I can't really explain it. It was some weird s***, man. It was some real cult $#@! When I heard the tape, I couldn't believe that this dude was really serious. He was sayin', 'Give up all your money.' I don't know if that meant 'Give it to me' or whatever, but on the tape he
said, 'Money doesn't mean anything.' "
Lauryn's success has not lifted her to new heights, but has added a burden that seems unbearable for most superstars. The article does notify us that Lauryn is in the booth working on something new and our hope is that she returns soon with a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Oh no! This is so sad to read about such a talented artist. As far as the whole Wyclef situation, he seems to be dancin' around the issue which makes things seem to be truthful about him and Lauryn. And it's a shame that he and Pras are family but aren't coo' like that with each otha. But oh well, guess that's juss a part of life.
And I hate to say this, but right now...Rohan is really makin' it hard for me not to do some serious male-bashin'! He should be ASHAMED of himself.
Lauryn, boo, I hope you get things togetha because it would be a travesty to see a talent like yours go to waste ova some bullisht drama!
