Mark got to Lena’s mother in less time than expected. When he arrived, she told him about everything. He was confused by what this woman just told him. Mark didn’t know whether to be upset or angry that his future wife and one of his best friends kept something from him so important.
“I can’t believe either one of them never told me.”
“They broke up soon after and they rekindled their friendship a few years later. They never talked about the baby. No one did. She hated me so much for signing those papers she didn’t speak to me for months. When she did confide in me again it just became a forbidden topic.”
“And I pushed their friendship apart and I was mad because he helped her out the other day. Was I that selfish?”
“Right now the only thing that can save that unborn child is the love you have for her.”
“Do you think that’s enough? Do you think love is enough to save what we have?”
“It’s worth a try Mark. We have to find her before it’s too late.”

Lena looked around and wondered what she was doing there. The room was slowly starting to fill up around her and it was only seven-fifteen. There were a few women sitting alone, two women were with their boyfriends and one was crying so hard she had to leave the building. The closer it got to eight o’clock the room started to clear out. One of the women and her boyfriend hugged and kissed and left with a smile on their faces. “Well they worked things out,” she thought to herself. Then a young girl walked in with her mother close behind. The whole time the girl’s mother seemed more upset that the teenager did. What would Mark say if he ever found out about this? She already knew the rumors were flying around about her being pregnant, but she could always deny they were true, but what if Rufus told anyone?
“Miss Thomas?” the nurse said tapping her on the shoulder. “We’re ready for you. Do you need a few minutes or are you ready now?”
Lena took a deep breath and followed the nurse into the back office without a word. She looked around the room and a chill went through her body. This was it. In a matter of minutes she wouldn’t be pregnant anymore. She’d recover and go back to her mother’s house with another secret. This was history repeating itself; the abortion, ending a relationship…everything. How could she live her life this way? How could she do this to the man she loved.

“Why wouldn’t Lena tell me what really happened with you two…about the baby?” Mark asked Rufus once they were in the same car on their way to find Lena.
“I thought it would be best if she told you. Besides we never talked about it again until last night. She was making herself sick on purpose trying to lose the baby she’s carrying now.”
“She told you this?” Mark asked.
“No I figured it out on my own. She reminded me of how she looked before she lost my—our baby. Lena had everything she wanted in you at the time in her life she was ready for it and I was happy for her. I thought she’d told you and that’s why you didn’t want me around anymore.”
“Call me insecure. I guess that’s why I questioned you so much about what went on between you too. When I told you she was pregnant with Des, she got mad at me for saying anything to you. Now I know why…I guess she thought it would hurt you—“
“Look, this is the place.” Mama Thomas said cutting off Mark and Rufus’ conversation.
“Are you sure this is it? Mark asked her mother.
“This is it. I’m sure of it. I just hope we’re not too late.”
Mark got out of the car and ran across the busy street, cars just missing him by inches but he didn’t care he had to get to Lena before it was too late. He walked in and looked around. Just being there made him uncomfortable so he could only imagine how Lena must’ve felt. He took a deep breath and slowly went to the front desk praying that he could stop her. He still had another ten minutes according to the clock.
“Excuse me, I’m looking for my fiancée Miss Lena Thomas.”
“She’s back with the doctor right now.”
“I have to see her. Is their any way that I can—”?
“I’m sorry, you’ll have to wait until she comes out.”
“It’s important. I had no idea she was coming here until this morning. Can you at least see if they’ve started yet?”
“Sure sir, I’ll be right back.”

“You can change into this gown and I’ll be back in a few minutes.” The nurse instructed and left the room.
Slowly Lena got undressed and slid into the white hospital gown. The room was freezing and smelled of disinfectant. Everything was white and sanitary; the surgical instruments looked cruel and ice cold. Did it have to feel like a punishment to be there? It was nothing like the room she had Destiny in that was all warm and inviting. Then again this wasn’t a celebration of life either. Lena hugged herself tight and waited for the nurse to return with the doctor, much to her surprise, she didn’t have to wait long.
“Miss Thomas, I’m Doctor Lewis. I’ll be doing your procedure today. We’re going to give you a mild sedative that should start working in less than a minute and the whole procedure should take less than thirty minutes.”
Lena lay down on the table and took a deep breath. “Fifteen minutes? That’s all?” she thought to herself. Thirty minutes and that was it. She closed her eyes as she remembered the look on Mark’s face the first time he found out he was going to be a father, then how he cried when Destiny was born. They fell in love again that day. She realized she was crying when the nurse tapped her shoulder.

Mark sat at home looking at the wall in front of him. He’d done all the crying he could once they told him that he couldn’t see Lena. He couldn’t bear to wait for her to come out so he decided to go home and wallow in guilt. He brought all that unnecessary pain into her life. How could he do that to the woman he loved? How could he hurt the mother of his children that way? Now it was too late to change any of it…it was done. At least he still had is daughter. Maybe there still was a chance for him to get Lena back but he didn’t have it in him to try.
The doorbell took him out of his trance he went to the door and there Lena was, standing in front of him. They just stared at each other for almost five minutes, tears still running down each of their faces. Mark couldn’t take the distance between then anymore and opened his arms and Lena went to him.
“I’m sorry baby. I am so sorry.” He said holding her so close he was smothering himself. “Why didn’t you tell me about the baby? Was it that bad? I tried to stop you today but I was too late.”
“I didn’t do it.”
“What? You—“
“My mother told me you know about what happened with me and Rufus. I was mad at first, but I should have told you. He and I should have told you but its something I never thought about or even talked about for that matter. Today brought all those feelings back. I was willing to risk my life then for a child when I was just a baby myself. I felt so empty then and I shut the whole world out for a long time. I didn’t want to feel that way again.”
“When I came for you they said that the doctor had already started.”
“I didn’t do it. I couldn’t. But I didn’t do it for you. I did it for myself. It goes against everything I stand for. Mark, you hurt me more than ever thought anyone could hurt another person. I realized I was getting rid of this baby only to hurt you the way you hurt me. I deserve to be happy and my daughter gives me so much joy, so much to live for. Why should I give a life away like that? I want a big family, I want lots of kids—“
“I know that and I want to be the—“
“—I’m not finished. She said backing away from him. And I deserve to have that, man or no man to share that with. I want to know if you’re still willing to be that man that I need, the father your children need. If you’re not ready for that then you need to let me be and when you’re ready for that, you’ll know where to find me…your children and I will be waiting.”
Lena went to walk away and Mark grabbed her by the arm and spun her around back into his arms and kissed her like never before. A few minutes later she looked at him wide-eyed and breathless. Mark just stood there and looked at her waiting for her to speak or even turn and walk away.
“I love you,” he said softly.
“I know,” she answered and backed away from him again. It wasn’t the answer he was looking for. “You have a lot to prove to me Mark.”
“So you’d wait for me?”
“Not entirely. I do have a life of my own to live. I can’t just sit around and wait for you to make up your mind.”
“I made up my mind and I want to make this work.”
“I’m going to give you some time to think about it—“
“I’ve thought about it for the last three days—“
“Make up your mind for sure. I’ll call you later.”
He watched Lena get into her car and drive away. He wanted to pull her inside and make love to her like never before but the time wasn’t right. He was going to wait on pins and needles for that phone call. He wanted to do right by his family and he knew exactly where to start. Mark went into his living room and closed the curtains putting him in virtual darkness. He got down on his knees and looked to the sky.
“God…I know I don’t do this as much as I should…but I feel like you tested me over these last few days. I want to do…no…I’m going to do right by Lena and Destiny and my baby. I just want you to guide me in the right direction and let your will be done. Amen.”
“I can’t believe either one of them never told me.”
“They broke up soon after and they rekindled their friendship a few years later. They never talked about the baby. No one did. She hated me so much for signing those papers she didn’t speak to me for months. When she did confide in me again it just became a forbidden topic.”
