“She took all her and my baby girl’s things and left.” Mark said to Tamir who stood there in shock looking at his friend who had obviously been crying. Mark fought the urge to drown himself in a bottle of Armadale and instead went to a friend for advice. “I got caught.”
“She saw you?” Tamir said trying to make sense of everything. “I mean I knew you wanted to wipe the slate clean and start over, be a faithful man to your family. Your commitment came a little too late.”
“Then she wound up with Rufus later on that day. He says that she was about to pass out downtown and he took her and my baby back to his apartment until she felt better. It just doesn’t sound right to me.”
“So…what’s wrong with that? Was he supposed to leave her there? Or are you mad because he didn’t call you to come and get her?”
“I would have at least liked to know what happened.”
“And you did know, didn’t you? Or do you hate the fact that she was with Scola? That’s it isn’t it? You think he’d really try and take her away from you don’t you? Well guess what, you already lost her. What they had was in the past, let it go.”
“I don’t know what they had…they’re hiding something from me. I’m going to get to the bottom of this and someone is going to tell me the truth. I am not going to let another n**** raise my daughter and be with the woman I love, I don’t care what I did or what anyone thinks, I didn’t lose her. I didn’t lose my family…not yet. It’s only been a day. I DID NOT LOSE MY FAMILY!”
Mark got up and stormed out of the front door and went straight to his car. He backed out of the driveway and sped off down the street. He was going to see his daughter and Lena no matter what it took.

Rufus sat in his house thinking about Lena. He wanted to call her cell phone just to see how she was doing, give her some words of comfort make her feel better or take her out to dinner. He picked up the phone and dialed all but the last number of Lena’s cell phone and decided against it. Maybe she needed the time alone like she said. “Lee deserves it.” Rufus thought to himself. He put on his headphones and started to work out, maybe it would take his mind off of her and Mark. The chiming of his cell phone over 50 Cent blaring in his ears interrupted him.
“Yo,” he answered.
“Scole…I need to talk to you.” Tamir said.
“What the deal?”
“Sisqo’s mad, yo. He just stormed out of here and I think he was going to see Lena and Des. I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes to see you too.”
“So?” he said laying back on his weight bench looking at the ceiling.”
“How was she looking yesterday? One of her girls told me she’s been looking kinda pale and she ain’t been taking care of herself.”
“Yeah, that’s pretty much it.”
“I don’t mean to speak ill of my dog but I blame it all on him. He put that girl through hell. She blew my cell phone up the other night looking for him. I left him at the club when he kissed that freak. Rumor has it Lena’s pregnant again.”
“Says who?”
“One of them chicks she hangs with. But I don’t believe it. The thing is should I let Mark know what I heard?”
“Nah man, leave that alone. He’s gonna go and bother her and she really doesn’t want to see him. He can go and get his kid but she doesn’t want to see him.”
“Don’t you think he has a right to know that he might be a father again?”
“Yeah, but we aren’t the ones to tell him that. Lena is.”
“Does he know about you and Lee—I mean the whole story?”
“I left that up to her to tell him and it still is up to Lena to tell that part of her life. I let it go a long time ago.”
“You can’t fool me for one minute. I think you should tell him.” Tamir said. “It’ll make him understand the bond between you and Lena.”
“He’ll know in due time, that is if Lena tells. Cause I won’t”

Mark went and talked to his mother expecting to get the lecture of a lifetime when to his surprise she comforted him and gave him some words of advice.
“A hard head makes for a soft behind and you learned that the hard way again.”
“I know, ma.” He said wiping the tears from his eyes. His mother and Lena were the only women to ever see him cry. Mark’s mother put her arm around him and gave him a comforting squeeze. “But I want to do right by Lena and Des.”
“That’s going to be hard to do after what she saw. She told me what her friends were telling her about you and that she didn’t believe them. Imagine how foolish she feels now knowing they were right.”
“What should I do, ma?”
“Do what your heart tells you to. That way you won’t feel bad if things don’t go the way you want them to.”
“Thanks Ma. If I can get Destiny this weekend I’ll bring her by to see you. I’m gonna see if Lena will let me see her. I’ll call you later.”
Mark kissed his mom goodbye and went to see his daughter. He had to see for himself what everyone was saying about Lena. He heard from someone she might have been pregnant but he knew that couldn’t be true. She would never hide something like that from him. He made the usual one-hour trip in record time. If he was lucky, his baby girl was almost ready for bed.
“Hi Ms. Thomas,” Mark said standing at the front door. “I see Lena made it here alright. Rufus called me and told me that he saw her downtown.”
“Yes, it’s not like her to miss a meal that way. What’s been going on at home that all of a sudden now she wants to stay here?”
“It’s a lot to deal with…for the both of us. She just packed up and left this morning. We had an argument last night but I didn’t think it was that bad. I just came to see Destiny because I know Lena doesn’t want to see me right now.”
“I’ll go upstairs and see if she’s done giving her a bath and I’ll see if they want to come down to see you.”
Mark sat and crossed his fingers silently praying that Lena would at least have the heart to sit in the same room with him.
“She saw you?” Tamir said trying to make sense of everything. “I mean I knew you wanted to wipe the slate clean and start over, be a faithful man to your family. Your commitment came a little too late.”
