Smith: 'Bad Boys' Made Me Into Sex Symbol
MIAMI - Will Smith says being a bad boy changed his career — for the better.
The actor says the opening scene of 'Bad Boys,' with him running down the street with his shirt open, turned him into a sex symbol.
"Up until that point, nobody ever looked at me (as a sex symbol) — I've always been a little goofy," he told AP Radio.
That's no surprise, considering he first showed his comedic chops in the 1990s sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." Co-star Martin Lawrence did the same in his own sitcom, "Martin."
Smith says the two of them joining forces again eight years after the original movie's release should come as no surprise.
"There's just some universal connection that we have that's unbreakable. When we get together, we act stupid ... and the camera loves it."
According to Smith, the camera loves it even more when there's ad-libbing going on. He describes a scene involving a boy courting his niece.
"Every father wishes they could do and say exactly what (my) character did and said. The entire scene was ad-libbed," he said. "When (the camera) cuts to the little boy's face, that was real fear (being shown) — he had no idea what (I was) going to say or do. He didn't know I was going to pull out the gun in that scene."
Smith says such a display of violence is par for the course in "Bad Boys II," adding that there's nothing wrong with the movie's high body count.
"Comedy has always been such that the more people that get hurt, the funnier it is. You can take it back to the banana peel," he said. "It's a dark comedy, and we're pushing the envelope of that tragedy concept."
"Bad Boys II" opens in theaters today.

Oh yesh, yesh! I gotta admit that BOTH Will and Martin were sexy as hell in the scene near the end of the first Bad Boys as their runnin' down the street. Before then, they were very goofy, but in a cute way! Anyhow, can't wait to go see the matinee tomorrow. I would go tonight, but I know I won't be able to hear a dag-blasted thing with the large crowd that's expected to turn out for it!
