'2 Fast' Movie Blamed For Fatal Accident
Officials Say Driver Had Just Seen Movie
The drag-racing movie "2 Fast, 2 Furious" is being blamed for the death of Los Angeles man over the weekend.
Los Angeles Police Department officials say Vahan V. Shahenian, 23, had just seen the movie and was traveling nearly 100 mph on a residential street when his car broadsided another car.
The driver of that car, Keiji Iko, 78, was pronounced dead at the scene, said police.
The authorities don't believe Shahenian was racing another vehicle at the time of the accident. Shahenian suffered a broken arm in the accident, and a passenger in his car was treated for internal
injuries.
According to The Associated Press, the collision, as well as high-speed chases that happened after drivers watched "2 Fast, 2 Furious," have prompted the California Highway Patrol to plan an event to prevent future accidents.
CHP officers stopped six vehicles and arrested the drivers for racing on Interstate 280, AP reported. The vehicles were exceeding the 120 mph. Several of the men produced ticket stubs to "2 Fast, 2 Furious."
A CHP spokesman told AP that a first-time racing conviction carries a sentence of 24 hours to 90 days in jail, and the impoundment of the vehicle.
"2 Fast, 2 Furious" is the sequel to the 2000 hit "The Fast and the Furious," starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Diesel did not return for "2 Fast, 2 Furious."
