Ex-Nun On Run After Stealing From School
LONDON -- A former nun's on the run in England after being convicted ot stealing up to $790,000 from the school where she was headmistress.
Colleen McCabe failed to appear for sentencing at a London court Friday. She'd been warned she faced a lengthy jail term for convictions last month for theft and deception.
A prosecutor says McCabe used some of the cash to accumulate a shoe collection that "would have made Imelda Marcus proud."
Prosecutors say she also bought expensive restaurant meals, West End theater tickets, Gucci jewelry, and gifts for friends and family. She bought her parents a trip on the Orient Express.
She was head of St. John Rigby College in south London for a decade. Prosecutors say her pilfering left the school unable to pay janitors and left library shelves bare.
