Floetry, Erykah Badu Top Lady Of Soul Nominations
Neo-soul duo Floetry and hip-hop priestess Erykah Badu came away with the most nominations for the 2003 Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards, which were announced at a July 17 press conference at Spago in Beverly Hills.
Floetry earned nominations in four categories, while Badu was named in three. Badu will also be honored with the 2003 Lady Of Soul Aretha Franklin Award as entertainer of the year, at the ceremony which will be held Saturday, August 23, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California.
Other top nominees include singers Heather Headley and Vivian Green, who earned three nods each in the single, album, and new artist categories.
The show will be hosted by comedian Arsenio Hall and singer/actor Tyrese, who made the announcements at the press conference, as well as nominee Heather Headley and comedienne Aisha Tyler. Actress Vivica A. Fox, who was also on hand, will be presented with the 2003 Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement.
Producer Don Cornelius said he is excited by the quality of nominations this year, which were voted on by radio programmers, retailers, and artists themselves. "The largest vote-getters for the most part are people who are into melodies,” says Cornelius. “That's not to say that mostly guys talking on drum machine beats, that rap and hip-hop is not still important and still one of the important cultural phenomenons on the planet. It's just to say that singing and songs seems to be making a comeback."

Wow! I DEFINITELY agree with Mr. Soul Train, himself, Don Cornelius that the nominations were all about quality this year!!! And big ups to my girl, Erykah Badu! She leans a lil' on the weird side, but that's why I love her music so much...it's different. Not to mention, Floetry who are also juss as good, IMO. And I also gotta give it up to Vivica Fox. She's a beautiful and outstandin' actress in her own right and deserves to receive the Lena Horne Award for Excellence!
