Escalator Accident Injures Several At Coors Field
DENVER -- Authorities say at least 20 people were injured Wednesday night in an escalator accident at Coors Field in Denver after a baseball game.
Fire officials and witnesses say the escalator carrying fans from the upper level to the street suddenly accelerated, sending people crashing into one another and forcing others to tumble down, authorities said. The escalator was carrying fans from the upper level to the street after a game Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks that was followed by a fireworks show.
Between 20 and 23 people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, many of them suffering from broken bones, bruises and cuts, said Denver Assistant Fire Chief Larry Trujillo. Luckily, none of the injuries was considered critical or life-threatening, he said.
Cherri Brownfield was on the escalator near the end when it sped up. She described it like having no brakes -- and everyone just piled up at the end.
Witness Nick Nossinger says people were just sliding down like an avalanche. He was at the field to watch the postgame fireworks display.
Coors Field vendor Alex Frenier said people were screaming and falling down.
Authorities are looking into what could have caused the escalator at Section 122 to suddenly accelerate. The long escalator is on the side of first base and connects the upper concourse to ground level.
More than 47,000 people attended the game.
I'm sure that must've been a scary experience! Whenever I go to the mall or concerts and see an escalator, I always head for the stairs instead and wait on my friends to meet me. The few times I have used an escalator, I always get kinda freaked out with waiting to step on the step that carries you up or down. So I guess this thing is one of my BIGGEST fears besides heights!
