Woman Dies in Amateur Boxing MatchST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Reuters) - A Florida woman died from injuries she received in a "Toughman" amateur boxing match, a hospital spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Stacy Young, 30, of Bradenton, died on Monday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, the spokeswoman said. Young was knocked out and suffered brain damage during a fight with another woman Saturday night in Sarasota during the "Toughman" competition, which matches amateur fighters.
The Sarasota Police Department said it had opened an investigation into the death of Young, who was married and had two daughters, aged 12 and 9.
Toughman contests allow untrained boxers who pay an entry fee to compete for cash prizes and trophies. Winners can move on from local to national competitions.
Young's husband Chuck told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune the couple had attended the Toughman competition on Friday and returned Saturday, deciding to compete for fun after they heard the event needed more participants. There are some things that I'm juss not gonna TRY if I know I'm no good at it; especially a boxing match! If I'm gonna fight, I'd rather do it if I'm provoked...and even then, I know my limitations! But I feel so sorry for this poor woman and her family.
