LL COOL J ON HIS WAY OUT? Def Jam may have seen its last LL release. (May. 30, 2003)
*Dang, we never saw this one coming. Billboard is reporting that LL Cool J, the very first artist to release a record on Def Jam, is seeking a new label home to peddle his wares.
This after a reported $20 million dollar deal with Def Jam was shot down by executives. While the deal that LL sought didn't happen, the rapper is still in negotiations with the label, for whom he has sold tens of millions of CD's.
In related news, LL is preparing for the release of his movie "S.W.A.T.," which is the big screen treatment of the 1970's series of the same name.
LL, along with Samuel L. Jackson, stars in the movie, which centers around a drug lord who offers a $100 million dollar reward to anyone that can free him from police custody.
::Sniff sniff:: When I heard about this on Doug Banks this morning, I couldn't believe it! I remember the first time I saw LL in "Krush Groove" when he rolled up in Russell's office and made him listen to his skills on "My Radio"--lol! That was my first favorite rap song at the tender age of 12. ::sigh:: Oh, but yeah, anyway, LL is a legend and true soldier at Def Jam. Hopefully things will work out with his negotiation and he'll be able to stay because if he bounces, well, that's all she wrote for Def Jam, in my opinion.
Didn't Samuel L. Jackson say he didn't want to make movies with rappers, but that's what he's been doin' from time to time? There's this new movie "S.W.A.T." with LL, "Deep Blue Sea" with LL, and "187" with Method Man. Ah well, I was juss wonderin'.
