Ike Turner Barred From Entering Japan (May 29, 2003) Ike Turner was barred from entering Japan last Wednesday (May 21) because of a 1990 cocaine conviction in the U.S. After being questioned for five hours at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, the 71-year-old guitarist was refused entry by immigration officials, who revoked his work visa.
Turner had been scheduled to headline the 2003 Japan Blues Carnival from last Thursday (May 22)through Sunday (May 25). Turner's band continued without him, playing the festival dates, while ticket holders were offered partial refunds.
On his official website, iketurner.com, Turner posted a letter to Japanese fans thanking them for support, saying, "Fortunately, my band, the Kings Of Rhythm, were allowed to bring to you my music. Know that I was with them in spirit and soul and that I felt the love that was shown to my band. I don't look back, but I look to the future. I hope that these issues can be resolved and that one day we will meet."I thought he told Tina that he gave up that narcotic?! Oh well...he actually has an official website?
