WHAT’S UP WITH MONICA’S NEW IMAGE? Singer shows more skin in new video. (May. 2, 2003)
*Although Monica’s video for her single “So Gone” is mild compared to many R&B and rap videos, the singer is showing more skin than we’ve ever seen before. In fact MTV’s website has this caption in it’s promotion to the video: “Monica: Her good girl image is ‘So Gone’.”
“We shot the video ... in Miami with Chris Robinson and Derek Luke from ‘Antoine Fisher.’ It just went really good,” Monica told MTV.
“The video is like [Luke] and I are in a relationship. In my mind I think he’s cheating. As you see in the video, my mind’s playing tricks on me. I’ve destroyed his
home and all this stuff for no reason. I get arrested as you would in real life.” And she appears in the video in revealing clothing including lingerie.
In addition to Luke, Missy Elliott, who produced the track, also appears in the video.
“‘So Gone’ takes you back to when people first heard me,” Monica said.
Her new album, “After the Storm,” drops June 17.
So according to MTV, she's still supposed to be dressing like the teenager she once was when she first came on the scene? Newsflash, MTV, everyone grows up at some point in time! I, for one, think her new look is nice. But MTV makes it seem like she has taken it to the next level like Christina did her last go round. Oh well, I guess it's like Janet Jackson said in a magazine article one time, the media is ready to attack as soon as you evolve into something more mature and sexy. However, I look at it like this: as long as an artist uses tasteful tactics when taking it to the next level, what's the problem?
