...with this news here! CAN WE SAY DESPERATE?!! I mean c'mon, now! I may be wrong, but I wonder if Shyne will give it a shot?! Mixtape king DJ Kay Slay is holding a contest to promote the release of his "The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1" CD. The man commonly known as the Drama King is promoting a number during his show on NY's Hot 97, allowing prison inmates to call in & leave a 16 bar message showcasing their best rhyme. Four winners will receive $500 directly into their commissary account. (EUR)

I don't think that means that rap is dead. Actually, it's a pretty decent way to get people who made a mistake and got locked up, and now possibly even get a deal out of this thing, and start their life over.

I guess I'm juss lookin' at it from an ol' person's point of view. When I read about the prisoners being contestants in the article, I immediately began to have negative thoughts about what they would probably rap about (I guess I have watched "Oz" juss a lil' too much ); but I will agree that this contest may give a prisoner a chance to start their life over on the right track if they're on a positive level. In my opinion, there's juss a tad bit too much negativity bein' glorified in some of today's rap music. Now I'll be the first to admit that I listen to some of the artists who rap about the not-so-positive things, but it's gettin' kinda crazy now. But hey, that's what's selling in today's world. It's a good thing that there's other music besides rap that I like to listen to though.

Yeah true that Cutie,
Methinks that rap music and hip-hop is basically about telling your story you know? That's what that's about, just being real and recounting what's you've seen. So consider a convict making a record about regret, what he's seen, what he's missed when he was locked up. Either way, as long as it's real emotions, it's gonna sell, cuz that's what touches people the most.

That is pretty much DMX alone... some rappers will have their few select songs about real emotions, as you stated above, but the majority of rap is about: women, sex, drugs, killing. That is not a sterotypical comment. I mean, damn, look at Nelly, he's got no real messages in his music, but it still sells... So, there are two sides to the way music sells. (We all know how well Thong Song did, so you can't deny it )
