They were at the concert for 10 minutes, chilling in the first row waiting for Dru Hill to come out. Marissa was becoming impatient because she didn't want to be there and be forced to remember Mark and everything he put her through. Their relationship fell on the rocks, and it didn’t end on the best terms. Ending it left them both bitter and not caring about each other, at least in Marissa’s case.
Sisqo didn't seem to have any intentions of stopping his ways either. He kept them up trying to replace what he lost with Marissa, even though she was the only girl he was ever in love with. He was backstage with some groupies, putting his mack down, and trying not to think of Marissa. He knew that since the break up she had started school again in New York, but the chances were slim that she would be at the show.
“Nah,” he thought, “she wouldn’t even bother.”
He walked over to the side of the stage to see the crowd growing. “This show is gonna be hype!” he thought, as he looked around the theatre. “Let’s see who I can pull on the stage tonight.” He thought grinning devishly. While he was eyeing the girls in the front row, he spotted a familiar face.
“Yo Nok!”, shouted Sisqó.
“Wassup man?”, asked Nokio as he walked over to where his fellow group member was standing.
Sisqó pointed to the familiar face without drawing attention to himself. “Is that Marissa?”
“Your Marissa?”
“Yeah, my Marissa n*gga, is that her?!”
“Look like her,” he chuckled, “maybe you can pull her on stage for your verse on “Men Always Regret”.
Sisqó rolled his eyes. “Man shutup that ain’t Rissa..I ain’t even gonna look that way tonight.”, he lied.
“Aight if you say so.”, said Nokio walking away leaving Sisqó by the curtain thinking about Marissa. It was a lot for him to handle; especially since he was at fault for the whole thing.
“Sisqó, you coming?”, asked one of the girls, pulling him by his hand.
“Huh? Oh..yeah.”, he said as she pulled him out of his trance.
He took a deep breathe and went to the forming circle of the Dru members and dancers. They prayed and Sisqo prayed that the show would be a hit like all the others. Deep down inside he knew would be because he was about to confront the only girl he was ever in love with. That alone was enough reason for him to sing from the heart.
They walked out onto the stage and stood in the shadows of the dim lights until the music of “Love/Hate” came on. The lights came on and in an instant, Sisqó belted out the intro with the anticipation he was holding in backstage, but failed to even look at Marissa.
Marissa sat in her seat as uncomfortable as possible as she watched her ex perform. She avoided making eye-contact with him and tried to focus on Woody, Nokio, Jazz, and Scola, hoping and praying that none of them saw her. Honestly, the sight of Mark made her sick. After all he did to hurt her, she wished she had never met him. But deep down inside of that broken heart, there was still someone who missed the love they had once shared.
“Ohhhhhhhhh girl, look at them!”, yelled Nikki over the crowd. “Aren’t they AMAZING?! And fine as hell, might I add!”, she laughed, unaware of Marissa’s attitude.
“Yeah I guess they are alright.”, Marissa said, just loud enough so Nikki could hear her.
Nikki just rolled her eyes, “Hell yeah they are!”
Dru Hill broke into their single, “I Should Be…”, while Woody and Scola made their way to the edge of the stage and began to serenade a couple of girls about five feet away from Marissa and Nikki.
Marissa began to panic quietly, while Nikki proceeded to scream louder and louder, trying to get the Dragon’s attention.
“Rissa! Why aren’t you screaming?! I want him to come this way!”
“NO!”, exclaimed Marissa out of reaction.
“What the hell is your problem, why not?!”, exclaimed Nikki.
“Sorry girl, I just don’t want them or him singing to me, I’d rather they sang to someone who really wants them to.”
Nikki just rolled her eyes and proceeded to scream with the rest of the audience.
The music for “I Should Be…” finally stopped, and Marissa started to feel a little more comfortable. As long as she was avoiding Mark, she felt like she could make it through the rest of their performance. After a few slow jams, they broke into “Men Always Regret”; the one song Marissa was hoping they wouldn’t sing. Mark’s verse was all too close to home. As his part came closer and closer Marissa noticed him looking at her more and more. She began to shift in her seat, and finally excused herself telling Nikki she needed a drink.
Marissa went in the lobby and sat on a bench with her head in her hands and cried. She couldn’t handle the old feelings she was feeling and the hurt Mark put her through. It was such a drastic change to her. She remembered being so overwhelmed when she found out Mark was continuously cheating on her. When she found his book with all the phone numbers, she let it slide. The constant phone calls from girls, and even finding panties that weren’t hers still wasn’t enough to make her leave. Until one day she caught him at the mall with another girl making out. All she could do was go home and cry. She confronted Mark about it the next day, and he told her that he would never cheat on her. They both knew he was lying, but she stayed with him in spite of what she saw. Eventually she woke up, and she just couldn’t take it any more. Her and Mark had done nothing but argued since she had confronted him. One day after a heated argument, he stormed out of the house. Marissa knew where he was going, so she packed up and left. Mark came home and she was gone. He knew she was gone forever. He gave up trying to get in touch with her when he found out that she had moved and started going to school in New York. He figured it was best and tried to forget about her by hopping hoe to hoe trying to fulfill what he knew now that he was missing; real love.
Back on stage all he could think about was Marissa, and the mystery girl that he had just seen walk out looking upset. He knew it wasn’t her, but for some reason he wanted to see if he was right. If he was right what would he do? Talk to her? Or just act like he didn’t see her? They closed their performance and sang “My Angel/ How Could You”, and went backstage. Mark couldn’t help but take a quick look around before the curtains closed.
Marissa jumped when her cell phone rang.
“Hello?”, she said, trying not to let Nikki know she was upset.
“Girl, where you at?! You just missed the end of the show..”, Nikki exclaimed into her earpiece.
Marissa cut her off, “I’m sorry Nikki, I’m just not feeling well. I’ma head home, but call me if you need a ride back later. I’m sure you won’t, but you know..”, she said, trying to let out a little laugh.
“Rissa, what about these passes?!”, Nikki exclaimed, talking about the V.I.P. passes she had gotten.
“Nikki, I’m sure you’ll manage without me. Just be careful.”, Marissa said, hanging up her phone.
Nikki sucked her teeth, and decided to make her way backstage to try and get to know her favorite singers better. She was a bit star-struck at first, just standing by the curtain, watching the guys as they talked to some other fans. She was plotting how she was going to make her move, when she noticed Sisqó looking her up and down. He had noticed she was the same girl sitting next to his mystery girl. Nikki returned the gesture with a wink, and walked seductively over to where he was sitting. Sisqó knew he had another groupie on his hands, and he was going to take full advantage of her.
