“Surprise!” shouted everyone at Cheri’s mothers’ birthday party two weeks later.
“Oh my goodness!” said Lorraine, “All this for me!”
“Yeah ma! This is all for you!” said Cheri hugging her mother. Her and brothers had thrown a huge party for their mothers’ 59th birthday party. Of course Dawand didn’t lift a finger to help. He didn’t even want to come tonight, if it wasn’t for Cheri convincing the rest of the guys to come, he wouldn’t have. Actually she didn’t really need to convince them, she just asked and of course they all agreed to go.
“Yeah ma, you’re babies did well huh?” asked Cheris’ older brother Jackson.
“Yes you did? Oh, this is all so beautiful.” said Lorraine as she looked around at the decorations and all the people who had decided to show up.
“Yeah well only the best for our momma.” said Cheris’ little brother Eric.
“Oh thank you babies. But you know what could be even better?” said Lorraine beginning to cry.
“What momma?” asked Cheri coming to her mothers’ side.
“It would be better if your father could be here.” she said wiping the tears that were falling from her eyes. She was overwhelmed. No one had ever thrown her a surprise party. Not only that but the fact her husband had been to every one of her birthdays’. He died last year of a heat attack.
“I know momma, we wish he was here too.” said Jackson helping his mother to a seat.
“Hello Ms. Lorraine.” said Dawand coming to give her a hug.
“Hello Dawand, how are you this evening?” she asked hugging him. She wasn’t too fond of him; however, she put up with him because of Cheri.
“I’m fine, happy birthday.” said Dawand.
“Thank you, who are all of these fine young men?” asked Lorraine as she looked around at the guys.
“Oh momma this is, Mark, Larry, Rufus, James, and Tamir. They’re close friends of Dawand. I hope you don’t mind that they came.” said Cheri as she introduced the guys.
“Oh no, the more the merrier.” said Lorraine.
“It’s nice to meet you ma’am.” said Mark reaching to shake her hand.
“Oh no boy, I don’t shake hands, I give hugs.” said Lorraine reaching out her arms.
“Oh okay.” said Mark as he bent down to hug her.
“That’s right. This Momma Lorraine, everybody’s family with me.” said Lorraine as they eached hugged her.
“Yeah, momma’s not gon let anybody walk by without hugging them.” said Eric, “But anyway ma, we got so many surprises for you.”
“Yup, we got a whole lot of stuff in store for you. Just sit back and enjoy.” said Jackson.
“Okay, guys go take your seats and we will begin.” said Cheri pushing the guys over to their seats.
The party was filled with surprises. The biggest surprise of them all was when Cheri, Eric and Jackson surprised their mother by flying in all five of her sisters.
“Oh my God! Vicki, Patsy, Roxey, Casandra, Darlene! What are you doing here?!” asked Lorraine with tears streaming from her eyes. She hadn’t seen her sisters since the funeral. Cheri, Eric, and Jackson knew that she wanted to see her sisters badly so they talked them into flying in to see her.
Some other surprises were when Lorraine’s grandchildren did little dance routines for her. Eric and Jackson sang “A song for Momma” by Boyz II Men. Cheri read a poem that she had written for her. And the rest of the presentations came from nieces and nephews. While everyone was enjoying theirselves, Dawand and Cheri were outside getting into an argument.
“I can’t believe you!” shouted Cheri.
“I told you I didn’t want to be here to begin with!” shouted Dawand.
“But you’re here now!”
“Cheri, I’m leaving, I’ll see you when you get home!” said Dawand walking away from her.
“Fine! Leave! It’ll be better off without you!” shouted Cheri as he drove away.
When she walked back inside she bumped into Mark who was looking for her.
“There you are.” said Mark.
“You were looking for me?” asked Cheri slowly feeling better. He always made her feel better.
“Yeah, well...yeah.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh nothing, where’s Dawand?”
“He left. Sorry punk.” mumbled Cheri as she looked at the floor.
“Why did he leave?” asked Mark noticing how sad she looked.
“He said he didn’t want to be here. I knew I should've let him stay at home. I’m sorry I made you guys come here.”
“Oh it’s aight, your family’s kinda cool.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, all of us think so. They’re in their right now going down the Soul Train line with the rest of ya family.”
“Yeah, they do that at every party we have.”
“Okay so lets go back in there.” said Mark holding out his arm for her to take.
“Okay.” said Cheri taking his arm.
When she walked back into the party she saw her cousin on the floor break dancing while everyone else stood around them cheering. Just when they stopped to look, James, Rufus, Larry, and Tamir walked over to her.
“Man Ree, yo family crunk!” said Larry nodding his head to the music.
“I know right, did you see Momma Lorraine coming down the line?” asked Rufus.
“I know! Momma Lorraine was dropping it!” laughed James.
“Yo where’s Dawand?” asked Tamir
“He left.” said Cheri.
“Why?” asked James.
“He said he didn’t want to be here.”
“Well good riddance.” said Trinity walking up just in time to hear that Dawand had left.
“You really don’t like him do you?” asked Mark shaking his head.
“You got that right!” said Trinity.
“Hey Ree Ree, where’s ya boy?” asked her cousin Pamela.
“Oh he’s not feeling well.” lied Cheri.
“Oh well, good, he was bringing down the party any way.” said Pamela.
“I know right, why have him here anyway when can’t nobody stand him?” asked Trinity.
“Because he’s my boyfriend. He should at least try to do things with me and my family.” said Cheri.
“Uh can we change the subject.” said Mark. Whenever he had a chance to be with Cheri, he didn’t like to talk about Dawand.
“Oh my goodness!” said Lorraine, “All this for me!”
