About a week later, Trinity had talked Cheri into going to a club, although she protested with all her might. She only agreed to go because Dawand was getting on her last nerve.

“Girl quit sulking. Dang, get up and dance with somebody. I mean you shot down the last five guys and all of them were fine as hell.” said Trinity coming off the dance floor.

“Look T, I don’t feel like it. I only came to get away from Dawand.” said Cheri shaking her head, but all of a sudden she felt a tap on her shoulder. She didn’t want to turn around because the last time she did it was some brotha reeking of alcohol asking her to dance.

When she didn’t respond to his tap, the guy decided to speak up.

“Hey ma.” said the guy.

“Look I don’t feel like dancing right now so go away.” said Cheri still not turning around.

“Oh so I guess a hug is out of the question too?” said the guy.

“A hug?” said Cheri turning around to find Mark standing behind her as well as Tamir. Tamir had spotted Trinity coming off the dance floor so he figured the girl she was talking to had to be Cheri.

“Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t know it was you.” said Cheri giving him a hug. When she backed away she gave Trinity a nasty look. “How come you didn’t tell me it was them?”

“They told me not to.” said Trinity winking at Tamir.

“So you two out partying tonight?” asked Mark his arm still wrapped around her shoulder.

“Yeah, you know how we do.” said Cheri giving him a sly smile. Trinity just shook her head cause she knew the length she went through to get Cheri out of the house.

“Actually I don’t but I’m dying to find out.” said Mark looking her dead in her eyes.

“Hey Ree Ree.” said Larry walking up behind Mark and Cheri. The rest of the guys were waiting in the background just in case it wasn’t them.

“Hey Larry.” said Cheri reaching to hug him.

“Where’s Dawand?” asked James reaching to hug her.

Cheri and Trinity just made a grumbling noise as a response.

“What’s up with the grumbling?” asked Rufus following James’ footsteps.

“Lets just say we were trying to forget about Mr. Scrooge for tonight.” said Trinity as Tamir made his way over to her.

“Why’re you calling him that?” asked Tamir putting his arm around her shoulder.

“Cause that’s what he is. I can’t stand that bastard.” said Trinity getting pissed off just thinking about him.

“Whoa, he’s still our boy. I’m sure he aint all that bad.” said James laughing at Trinity’s response.

“You’re right, he’s worse.” said Cheri. Mark just looked at her, he wanted to know more but only when they could be alone.

“I’mma let that go and ask you to dance with me.” said Mark as he pulled her out to the dance floor.

“I guess I have no choice seeing as how you’re pulling me out there.” said Cheri giving in to him.

The rest of the guys just looked at each other. They had warned Mark during the week not to make a move on Cheri, but all he would respond was that he knew what he was doing.

“I hope that n**** know what he doing.” said Rufus as he watched them out on the floor. They were pretty close. Yeah the floor was crowded but the two of them were closer than close.

“I know, but y’all know he hardheaded.” said James.

“I personally don’t see nothing wrong with what they doing.” said Trinity.

“That’s because you can’t stand Dawand.” said Tamir kissing her ear.

“You allllllllllllllll ready know.” laughed Trinity.

“Yo man give him a chance, he’s cool people.” chuckled Rufus.

“Whatever, that n**** annoying.” said Trinity frowning at Rufus’ comment.

“Yeah, he’s annoying, especially when he start bragging about what he got.” said Larry.

“Ooh I can’t stand it when he do that s***.” said Tamir, “That n**** throw everything he got in everybody’s face.”

“ I know, but he do got ya back if you need him.” said James.

“True, but he need to chill with some of the s*** he be doing.” said Larry.

“Yeah, I noticed some things he does to Ree.” said James.

“Oh so y’all notice how he treats her.” said Trinity nodding her head.

“I mean it hasn’t been too much but I notice how he tries to make her do things for him.” said Tamir.

“Yeah like she’s his damn maid or something.” said Rufus shaking his head.

“I know. He needs to quit that before he loses her. I mean look, she’s already over there all hugged up with that fool.” said Larry nodding his head in Mark and Cheri’s direction.

“I know.” said James.

“Damn Ms. Cheri. I didn’t know you could dance like that.” said Mark just as the song switched to a slow one.

“I know, there’s a lot about me that you don’t know.” said Cheri as she placed her arms around his shoulders.

“ I can’t wait to find out more.”

“You will in time.”

“I hope so.”

“So Ree you ready to go yet?” asked Trinity with Tamir around her waist, she was kinda hoping that she could get Cheri home so she could kick it with him.

“Yeah I’m ready. But Mark said he would take me home.” said Cheri pointing at Mark.

“You sure?” asked Trinity giving her that smile that they gave each other when they knew something was about to go down.

“Yeah, well after he drops off James.” said Cheri returning the smile.

“Okay, Tamir you’re following me home right, or should I follow you since you gotta drop them off.” said Trinity as she turned to look at him.

“You can follow me.” said Tamir giving her his sexiest look.

“Ooh okay.” said Trinity returning the favor.

“Oh Lord.” said Rufus shaking his head.

“I know right, see y’all later.” said Larry climbing into Tamirs’ car.

“Bye James.” said Cheri as they dropped James off at his house.

“Bye Ree, Mark.” said James as he pointed his finger at him.

“I know, I know. See ya later.” said Mark nodding his head, knowing what he was talking about.

They watched him walk into the house and then drove off. They were quiet for a minute before Mark realized who he what he wanted to ask her.

“Why did you say what you said about Dawand?” he asked briefly looking at her.

“What did I say?” asked Cheri.

“You know, when Trinity called him a bastard and James said he wasn’t that bad and you said yeah he’s worse.”

“Damn, tape recorder?”

“Nah, I just thought it was kinda weird, I mean you two always seem happy together.”

Cheri just laughed.

“What’s funny?”

“The fact that you think we’re happy.”

“Your not?”

“No, we haven’t been happy for a while. Everything we do in front of you guys is just a show.”

“A show? Why?”

“He only looks at me as a trophy. So he treats me like I’m nothing. To him I’m his maid or whatever. In front of you guys we’re this happy couple. But he slips up sometimes. I know you’ve seen it.”

“Yeah, I’ve noticed he does ask you to do things for him and yet he barely does things for you.”

“See, I don’t think he really knows how to treat a woman. If he did he wouldn’t treat me that way.”

“So why do you stay?”

“For some reason it’s like I can’t seem to get away. I have broken up with him plenty of times and yet he comes to me begging me, and telling me he’s gonna change.”

“And I guess he hasn’t.”

“Nope, not one bit. We don’t even talk at home. It’s like we’re just two people occupying the others time.”

“Man, I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t see why he doesn’t like to talk to you, you’re cool to talk to.”

“Thank you, you are too.”

“I know.”

“Whatever, but still he’s….”

“Look, can we change the subject. I don’t wanna talk about him anymore.”

“That’s fine with me.”

“I was thinking about you yesterday.”

“You were?”

“Yeah.”

“What were you thinking?”

“Just that I wanted to get to know you more. You know try to get closer to you.”

“Well that’s fine with me. I wanted to get to know a little more about you too.”

“Maybe we could hook up some time and talk.” said Mark as he pulled up in front of her house.

“Maybe.” said Cheri looking at him.

Mark wanted to kiss her badly. Actually he wanted more than that but of course he couldn’t.

“Thanks for dropping me off.” said Cheri.

“Anytime.” said Mark.

Cheri then leaned into him for what he thought was a kiss. Instead she kissed him on the cheek next to his lips. Then she planted a small peck on his lips. She continued to do that a couple of more times before she backed away.

“See ya later.” she said as she climbed out of the car.

“See ya later.” said Mark wanting even more.

Damn, he thought as he drove away, I have got to get her. She’s definitely with the wrong man. She belongs with me.
