December 31st
New Years Eve was the end to a surprising year. The Ruffin’s and the Andrews’ sat in the penthouse of the L’Hermitage hotel in Beverly Hills on an extended honeymoon ready to bring in the year to come. Kiara sat looking out the window in retrospect of the last 11 months…all it’s joys and it’s pains. She smiled when she thought of how she found true love in the last place she ever imagined it would be. She and Tamir’s whirlwind romance was more than she thought she could handle but she finally put her total trust in a man and it didn’t steer her wrong.
“Baby, you okay?” Tamir asked handing Kiara a glass of champagne. “You’re standing here all by your lonesome.”
“I’m fine. Just looking out at the world…and the rain.”
“You never told me why you said in your vows I was the rain you needed in your life. I’m still waiting on your explanation.”
“Look out there,” she pointed down at the street below. “You see how everything is so clean and new? That’s what you did for me. You made everything so new for me and washed away all the pain I felt in the past.”
“Now I understand,” he smiled and kissed his wife’s forehead. “It’s a shame we couldn’t go out tonight like we wanted.”
“Hey you two! It’s two minutes ‘til midnight!” Mark yelled from across the room.”
The newlyweds joined each other in the center of the room and watched on television as the ball dropped in Times Square.
“I know what my resolution is for this year,” Mark said “To be the best husband and father I can be.”
“Well mine is to keep this woman here happy,” Tamir said hugging Kiara around the waist.
“You stole my resolution!“ So what’s your New Year’s resolution?” Kiara asked India.
“To be a good mommy and have these twins with no complications.” She answered stuffing a strawberry into her mouth.
Mark spit out his champagne. “T-twins?!”
“You mean you didn’t know?” Tamir asked his friend while patting him on the back. “That’s why I didn’t say anything because I thought she told you.”
“India! Why didn’t you tell me we were having—“
“Surprise?” she said with a smile standing up in front of Mark and pointing at the television. They watched quietly as the confetti fell in Times Square and put their glasses on the table in front of them. Kiara, Mark, Tamir and India all joined hands and Tamir prayed their year be a blessed one. After their “amens” the friends hugged each other and went to their cell phones to call family and friends.
“Kiara…” Tamir asked taking his wife’s hand.
“Yes.”
“Thank you…thank you for making my life complete.”
“You’re welcome. I love you.”
They all went back out onto the balcony to watch the fireworks over the Los Angeles sky. It didn't matter that a light drizzle had started again. The New Year began with new love and new lives for them all.
