February 7th
Kiara sat looking out of the water streaked window as the nighttime traffic went by. She never drove in the rain, she always cared to admire it from her bedroom window. The house was always quiet now since Chris was gone. Sometimes Kiara would still rush home after classes only realizing after getting home that he wasn’t coming over. He would constantly ask her what was the sense of her running home to wait for him to come over when she wasn’t giving him a reason to. Now there were no classes to rush home after, no Chris to wait for…just silence and herself. Never did she want for anything, she had a good job, a great best friend, a house that was all her own, Kiara had it all, except love.
“Maybe tonight I can sleep,” she said climbing into bed and sinking underneath the comforter. The rain always seemed to lull her into dreamland. Her doctor had prescribed sleeping pills for her but she refused to take them, hoping that exhaustion would take over and demand her into a long slumber. She turned on the radio and smiled at her favorite song, “April Showers”. She smiled at the fact that Chris hated Dru Hill. “They’re a bunch of f**s!” he would say to her. Now she could listen to them sing whenever she wanted. The sound of the rain and Woody’s voice sent her off into a much-needed sleep.
“Did I hear that right?” she jumped straight out of bed and turned up the radio.
“…That’s right ladies, if you’re down because you haven’t got that special someone to spend Valentine’s Day with, Dru Hill will be giving a special Ladies Only concert on Valentine’s night at Black Ice…”
Kiara screamed in delight. She ran to the phone when it rang knowing exactly who it was. “India, did you hear…”
“Hell yes! I’m on my way to get the tickets now!” India yelled into her cell phone. “Just pay me back later!”
“You got that! Call me later at work…bye.”
Kiara popped her Enter the Dru CD into the stereo and jumped up and down in her bed. She felt alive again for the first time in weeks. This concert was exactly what she needed.
February 14th
Kiara stood in front of a full length mirror and examined herself. “How did I let India talk me into this,” she thought turning to see her back totally exposed except for the blue leather straps that crossed it. The matching knee-length skirt had splits up the sides. She would have felt totally naked if it weren’t for the blue leather boots that met the bottom of her skirt. She matched from head to toe. Just as she gave her self one more look, India knocked on the door.
“Ki-Ki you look better than when you tried it on! I’m surprised you didn’t change your mind about wearing it.”
“There’s a first time for everything,” she sighed. Picking up her purse, she and India headed out the door.
“I don’t want to hear the “C” word tonight, okay Kiara?” India said as they pulled into the parking lot of Black Ice.
“He is the farthest from my mind, especially tonight.”
They made their way into the club. Sitting at a table near the front, they soaked up the sights. The stage was only a few steps away and India hoped no one would block their view. Kiara got a glass of white zinfandel. India was designated driver and just had water.
“Are you sure you don’t want just one drink?” Kiara asked as India eyes her glass of wine.
“Nope, I’m cool…besides you need this night more than I do. Enjoy yourself. Besides, I got a little sumthin’ sumthin’ to get into later,” India smiled.
The club lights dimmed and the music started. Women at the back of the club began to flock toward the stage. India and Kiara jumped up front of the crowd so they wouldn’t lose their view.
Kiara stood completely still, just looking in his eyes. “Damn he’s even sexier in person,” she thought “That damn Nokio!” she whispered. India’s laughter brought her back to reality, Kiara didn’t know she had been heard. Nokio was indeed her favorite. Everything about him intrigued her. She found herself smiling when they began to sing Beauty. She had dreams about this song, played out her own video for it in her mind over and over again. She glanced over at India who was locked in a stare with SisQo. India always said she would die if she saw Dru Hill in person and they noticed her out of a crowd. Luckily, for her and Kiara’s sake she stayed conscious.
Through the six song performance, Kiara smiled continuously as they sang all of her favorites; Tell Me, Never Make A Promise, April Showers, These Are The Times, So Special and Beauty. All the women in the club received long stemmed red roses from the group and a free glass of champagne after the performance. Kiara and India sat back at their table, first quietly…then they both burst out into uncontrollable laughter.
“Please tell me you’re glad you came?”
“Hell yes! I could have had ten men and they all would have gotten dissed tonight so I could be here!”
“I’m just glad I got somebody to bring all this penned up hormonal frustration to. Speaking of which, when are you--?”
“Don’t start, India. Not here, not tonight.” Kiara frowned. India always seemed to bring up Kiara’s virginity at the wrong time. “It’s gonna make me think of that person’s name I’m not allowed to say.”
“Ki-ki, I’m sorry for bringing it up. But if that’s the reason why Chris and you are through then you didn’t need him anyway. He’s an inconsiderate ass not to respect your wishes.”
“Thanks,” she said sipping her champagne. “You’re right he is an ass!”
“Excuse me miss…I was told to give this to you. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
The man handed Kiara a peach-colored rose with an envelope attached that said “Do Not Open” and disappeared back into the crowd.
“Who is it from?” India asked.
“I don’t know. It says do not open.”
“Ahem…excuse me ladies,” a man spoke into a microphone from the stage. “If you just received a colored rose a few moments ago, could you come up to the stage please.”
India nudged Kiara’s arm almost pushing her out of her chair. She walked up to the stage and stood among three other women. All of them far more beautiful than she was, but holding a colored rose.
“…Now ladies. You have received these roses from a very special someone and they are waiting for you in a limo outside. The drivers of these limousines have an identical rose. Match the color of those roses and step into the limo to see who you’ll be spending the rest of Valentine’s Day with. Enjoy ladies!”
The three other women ran off to see who their dream date was. Kiara walked slowly from the club and stepped outside to see all the other limousines driving away from the parking lot. “Guess that ones mine,” she took a deep breath and walked over to it. The driver opened the door and Kiara almost fainted.
