THE RIAA GETS IN THE WAY OF FILE SHARING: Brooklyn woman sued for having more than 100 files on cpu.
(Sep. 3, 2003) *The recording industry is providing its most detailed glimpse into some of the detective-style techniques it has employed as part of its secretive campaign against online music swappers. The disclosures were included in court papers filed against a Brooklyn woman fighting efforts to identify her for allegedly sharing nearly 1,000 songs over the Internet. The recording industry disputed her defense that songs on her family's computer were from compact discs she had legally purchased.
According to the documents, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) examined song files on the woman's computer and traced their digital fingerprints back to the former Napster file-sharing service, which shut down in 2001 after a court ruled it violated copyright laws.
The RIAA, the trade group for the largest record labels, said it also found other evidence inside the woman's music files suggesting the songs were recorded by other people and distributed across the Internet.
Comparing the Brooklyn woman to a shoplifter, the RIAA told US Magistrate John M. Facciola that she was "not an innocent or accidental infringer" and described her lawyer's claims otherwise as "shockingly misleading."
The woman's lawyer, Daniel N. Ballard, of Sacramento, Calif., said the music industry's latest argument was "merely a smokescreen to divert attention" from the related issue of whether her Internet provider, Verizon Internet Services Inc., must turn over her identity under a copyright subpoena.Eurweb.com

(from Tech tv) You Are So Sued! Our list of who's bearing brunt of RIAA's legal rampage. By Tech Live staff Things are getting serious. First, "Tech Live" was the first to publish the RIAA Hit List, the list of peer-to-peer application users being targeted by RIAA subpoenas.
Now we bring you the names of those facing actual lawsuits.
One note: The media, including "Tech Live," has been quick to name the Recording Industry Association of America as the source of the lawsuits. There's no doubt that the RIAA is behind the suits, but the plaintiffs named in these cases are the individual record companies, not the RIAA.
Their complaint: copyright infringement. Their target: people sharing protected music -- music said to be the property of the record companies.
"Tech Live" used the same means to obtain these names as we used to obtain the subpoenas for the original RIAA Hit List. All court files have been entered into the public record and are available through the US District Court's PACER online database.
As of Sept. 11, 261 cases have been filed in just nine of the more than 90 U.S. district courts scattered around the country. So far, all 261 suits have been filed in California, Colorado, Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas. Not all files are yet available online through the PACER system.
Following is a list of those being sued by various record companies, and the district court in which the suit was filed. You'll find in parentheses the cities where those courts are located.
Check back often for regular updates, as more suits are likely to be filed.

I guess the RIAA want to be taken seriously. Not like they lost all that much money. Its a few billion dollars. I'm not saying that I have a few billion dollars lying around but they can only get people in the USA cause as far as I know and this was on the news, there is no law against this in Canada. There could be other countries that this is the same too.

I actually have no problem buying the individual songs of music I like, but I want them to be priced accordingly. I'm not going to pay a dollar per song. Apple set up a nice system that I checked out over this past weekend, I'd have absolutely no problem doing that.
Lol, they didn't even lose one billion dollars. This year, 65 million less cd's were sold than last year. 65 mutiplied by 15 dollars gives you 975 million dollars. Even at 20 dollars per cd you only get 1,300 million. It is a big loss, but not as big as they're making it out to be.

Well from tech tv they said that in the year 1999 that sales was at 16,9 billion dollars and by 2002 it was 12,4 billion. The RIAA have nothing else better to do.
Then again the different artists should release the same cd all around the world. An album in the US has 14 tracks, then the same album in england has 17 tracks then Holland have like an extra 4 tracks and then the Japan version has 2 unreleased songs. So what are the fans suppose to do?

As soon as you finish downloading, move your files to another folder. I always keep 1 file in my folder. I don't have to worry as much because its a Pixar animation video and not a mp3. Or, you can try changing your name and location every time you log on. Make sure you download the free file from techtv.com that blocks the RIAA from finding you.
